Chapter 254 Stubborn
Chapter 254 Stubborn
Back at the Zhenbei Prince's Mansion, Shen Qingtan met the Zhenbei Prince's Consort at the screen wall.
Shen Qingtan stopped and asked, "Mother, are you leaving the manor?"
"Mother has received news that Changsheng has woken up. Go and visit him."
When the Princess of Zhenbei mentioned Gu Changsheng, a trace of sorrow appeared between her brows and eyes.
She grew up in Liangzhou and rarely returned to Nanlingzhou. After marrying the Prince of Zhenbei, she was not allowed to leave Liangzhou.
Every year, she would write to her brother and sister-in-law, inviting them to visit her in Liangzhou.
The first time she met Gu Changsheng, the child was only two or three years old. He was very quiet, well-behaved, and obedient, without any of the liveliness of a typical child.
As he grew up, he became very gentle and cheerful, and very polite. He seemed to listen to his elders, but in reality, he had his own set of principles and was very upright.
Because of Manman's matter, he left home for more than ten years, and his personality became cold and lonely. He closed himself off, and no one could get into his heart.
On the day Gu Changsheng returned to the capital, she went to the Gu residence to see him. He was indifferent and distant, and would never again call her "aunt" as affectionately as he did when they were children.
He was apologizing to Manman for losing her fourteen years ago.
In her heart, she never blamed Gu Changsheng. When she saw that he had gone blind, she felt not only heartache but also relief.
I'm so glad Manman is back.
If Manman hadn't come back, who knows how much hardship that child would have suffered outside.
She helped him let go of his inner conflicts and reconcile with himself.
Gu Changsheng agreed.
Even after learning that Gu Changsheng was in poor health and could no longer practice medicine, he said nothing and forced himself to detoxify Zhao Yi.
At this moment, Princess Zhenbei realized that Gu Changsheng had not let go of everything from the past and was willing to sacrifice everything for Shen Qingtan to atone for his mistakes.
But what wrong did he do?
The culprit has been brought to justice and received the punishment he deserved.
Everything from the past ended after the two of them returned home.
Gu Changsheng should no longer bear such heavy shackles.
Princess Zhenbei believed it was necessary to have another in-depth talk with Gu Changsheng, to make him realize that in this family, neither Shen Qingtan nor he was dispensable.
Shen Qingtan said softly, "Brother Changsheng is very troubled. Please try to comfort him."
"This child is too stubborn."
Princess Zhenbei's gaze fell on Shen Qingtan's weary face, and a pang of heartache rose within her. She raised her hand to smooth the wind-blown strands of her hair.
"Mom asked the kitchen to make you some soup, remember to drink it."
"Mother, I'll drink it in a bit." Shen Qingtan felt the Princess of Zhenbei's concern, and a bright smile appeared on her face. She asked softly, "Did you send an invitation to Uncle Qin's family?"
Princess Zhenbei said, "Mother is concerned about Yi'er's illness, so she has postponed the date to tomorrow. Come to my courtyard early tomorrow morning and pick out a few gifts for the Qin family to thank them for taking care of you over the years."
Shen Qingtan said, "Please don't bother choosing anymore. There are many things in my storeroom that Yaoyao likes. I'll have Tingxue fetch them later."
“This is a gift from Mother to the Qin family, how can you take it from your private treasury?” The Princess of Zhenbei’s eyes softened even more: “Keep your private savings for yourself.”
Shen Qingtan nodded. Smelling the elegant and gentle fragrance emanating from the Princess of Zhenbei, her anxious heart became exceptionally calm, and she couldn't help but reach out and hug the Princess of Zhenbei.
Her head rested on the shoulder of the Princess of Zhenbei, and a strange feeling welled up inside her, like a weary bird returning to its nest.
Princess Zhenbei patted her head, her heart as soft as cotton, and said gently, "Manman, you haven't been sleeping well these past few days. Go back to your room and have something to eat, then get a good night's sleep."
Shen Qingtan snuggled against the shoulder of the Princess of Zhenbei, and in her mother's warm embrace, much of her fatigue dissipated.
This is probably the natural dependence of a child on their mother; when tired or weary, they will instinctively seek her out.
She reluctantly let go, bid farewell to the Princess of Zhenbei, and returned to the courtyard.
Liu Yue happened to come out of the house and saw Shen Qingtan return. She quickly asked, "Second Madam, how is Young Master Shen?"
"My brother's health isn't good; he needs to rest and recuperate." Shen Qingtan glanced into the room and asked, "How is Second Master?"
"After you left, the Second Master has been in a deep sleep and only recently woke up," Liu Yue said worriedly. "The Second Master hasn't eaten all day. I'm going to the kitchen to get him some food."
"Go quickly," Shen Qingtan instructed before entering the house.
Tingxue was very perceptive; she didn't follow them inside but instead stood guard at the door.
As Shen Qingtan approached the inner room, she heard a cough.
Her heart tightened, and she subconsciously quickened her pace to enter the inner room, where she saw Zhao Yi propping himself up and reaching for the white porcelain teacup with gold trim on the bedside table.
His body was so thin and frail that the loose undershirt made him look even more weak and unsteady, which was quite alarming.
"You want water, don't you know to call for someone?" Shen Qingtan walked over quickly, helped Zhao Yi lean against the headboard, took a cup, poured warm water, and held it to his lips.
Zhao Yi took a sip of water from her hand to moisten her throat: "How is my cousin?"
“Brother Changsheng is in poor health and cannot concentrate for long periods of time, otherwise it will trigger his illness. Treating patients requires a great deal of energy, so he should not continue practicing medicine.”
Shen Qingtan said guiltily, "Old Zhong said that he delayed the treatment time because he was looking for me, and he will need to recuperate for three to five years. His eyes will only be able to see objects and will not be able to recover to their previous state."
At this point, she said with a heavy heart, "The scenery in Xishan is beautiful and the environment is quiet, which is very suitable for recuperation. I plan to take Brother Changsheng to Xishan to recuperate, hoping that he can gradually let go of his worries in the process of spending time together."
Zhao Yi nodded slightly, understanding the crux of Gu Changsheng's problem. Only when he saw Shen Qingtan doing well would he be truly at peace.
After feeding Zhao Yi a glass of water, Shen Qingtan carefully examined Zhao Yi's expression and noticed that his complexion was much better than before.
She helped Zhao Yi lie down, brought up Zhao Jue's matter, and finally revealed her plan.
