Chapter 183: A Brother’s Worry For Protection
Chapter 183: A Brother’s Worry For Protection
Out in the hallway, Mark gave Kevin one last warning look before he and Charles walked back to their own room, locking the door behind them.
Left entirely alone with the stone-faced bodyguards, Kevin stood frozen in the corridor. Adrian’s sharp, threatening words echoed heavily in his ears, sending a chill down his spine that had nothing to do with the gunfire downstairs. Realizing just how badly he had messed up, he finally turned around and quietly retreated to his own room.
Meanwhile, inside their bedroom, Mark and Charles settled back onto the mattress, the adrenaline from the midnight chaos still humming through their veins.
Mark leaned back against the headboard and shook his head. "Your friend is something else," he murmured. "Fearless, stubborn, and completely impossible to intimidate."
"Honestly, Adrian handled that better than I would have," Charles said. "What Kevin said was completely inappropriate. Who asks to stay in another man’s room with his boyfriend? That’s crossing a line."
He frowned. "Maybe I’m wrong, but something about Kevin doesn’t sit right with me. I don’t like him"
Mark smiled, a fond warmth entering his eyes as he looked at his partner. "Of course you don’t. Since Adrian doesn’t like him, I already knew you’d automatically be on your friend’s side."
"One hundred percent," Charles said without a single shred of hesitation. "Whose side did you expect me to be on?"
Mark’s smile widened, but it quickly faded as he listened intently to the sudden shift in the house. "Babe... the gunfire. It completely stopped, right?"
Charles noticed the sudden quiet too. He looked at Mark’s tense posture. "You’re worried about your brother, aren’t you?"
"Yes. One hundred percent," Mark admitted, his shoulders tight. "Just like you always worry about Adrian."
"I know he’ll be fine," Charles reassured him, reaching out to squeeze his hand. "Matteo can handle anything."
"I should go downstairs and check on him," Mark said, but before he could slide out of bed, his phone buzzed loudly on the nightstand. He snapped it up, reading a fresh text from Matteo:
Everything is settled now. You guys can go back to sleep.
Mark’s fingers flew across the screen as he typed back a reply:
Where are you? Let me see you first.
Are you okay?
Matteo’s response came in almost instantly:
I’m fine. Everything is under control. I’m heading back to my room now.
Needing to see it for himself, Mark stepped out of the bedroom. True to his word, Matteo was already walking down the long hallway, just about to turn the corner toward the master suite.
Mark quickly closed the distance between them, his eyes scanning his twin for any signs of injury. "Are you completely okay? What the hell happened down there? Who were those people, and what did they want?" Mark asked, throwing one question after another without giving him a chance to breathe.
Matteo held up a hand. "Hey, look at me. I’m fine. It was just Iris’s men. They came here thinking it would be easy to breach my security and take her away, but they’ve already been completely taken care of."
Mark let out a heavy sigh, looking at his brother with deep concern. "Teo... when are you going to let her go? Instead of keeping her locked up here and letting her be the constant reason for all this trouble?"
"I’ll look into it," Matteo answered smoothly, wanting to end the discussion for the night. "Now, it’s late. Sweet dreams. Let me see you walk back inside your room so I can go to sleep peacefully."
Mark frowned slightly, not entirely satisfied. "You’ll look into it soon, right?"
Matteo sighed playfully, stepping forward to grab Mark by his shoulders and physically turning him back around toward his bedroom door. "Please go back inside your room, sir. We will talk about this properly in the morning."
Mark finally relented, a small smile breaking through his seriousness. "Alright, fine. Goodnight."
"Goodnight," Matteo said.
He stood perfectly still in the corridor, watching intently until Mark stepped inside, closed the door, and the distinct click of the lock echoed through the hall. Only then did Matteo turn around and walk into his own bedroom to meet Adrian.
The moment the door clicked open, Adrian rushed across the room, throwing his arms tightly around Matteo’s neck.
"Babe! You’re back," Adrian cried out, his voice thick with anxiety as he immediately pulled away slightly to check his body. "Are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?"
Matteo caught his hands, holding him gently in one place to stop the frantic searching. A soft chuckle escaped his lips. "You are acting exactly like Mark right now. I’m completely fine, Rian. Those people downstairs were just Iris’s men, and my security detail has already taken care of every single one of them."
Adrian’s expression turned deeply frustrated, a bitter edge entering his voice. "Why would they even attempt something like that? Didn’t they realize how completely insane their boss is? Iris was so wrong to ever think of kidnapping Mark. Especially after what she did to me before... I let it slide back then, and then she went ahead and did it again to your brother. It’s so incredibly wrong of her."
Seeing how worked up his partner was getting, Matteo didn’t say a word. Instead, he reached down and swept Adrian up into his arms, lifting him off his feet.
Adrian instinctively wrapped his arms around Matteo’s neck and rested his head against his shoulder as Matteo carried him effortlessly to the bed.
Matteo lowered him gently onto the plush pillows before climbing onto the mattress beside him. He pulled the heavy duvet over both of them, cocooning them in warmth as he gathered Adrian close against his chest.
Matteo looked down at him, brushing a stray lock of hair from his forehead. "You don’t have to worry about her anymore, baby."
"I’m not worried about her," Adrian clarified, his brow furrowing as he snuggled closer into Matteo’s chest. "I’m worried about the danger and trouble she’s causing, even while she’s locked up under your estate. Just let her go, Matteo... when are you finally going to release her?"
"I’m meeting with her father very soon," Matteo murmured. "Her entire situation will be sorted out then. I just wanted her to learn a permanent lesson first."
Adrian let out a soft breath, nodding against his skin. "Alright, baby."
With the threat downstairs finally put to rest, Adrian shifted slightly in Matteo’s arms. His expression grew hesitant as he thought back to everything that had happened in the hallway while Matteo was away.
"Hey, babe..." he began softly.
